Auschwitz-Birkenau, 2023, three-dimensional embroidery of a stone dissolving into threads, by Itamar Yehiel

I found a single rock on the railway track leading to Auschwitz-Birkenau. It inspired this work.

Stone is strong, dense, and stable. This one breaks apart into delicate single threads. Each thread is thin and almost invisible, creating its own path and carrying a life story. The stories cross, connect, and entangle.

From right to left, the stone falls apart: the horrors of the Holocaust and the Second World War. In the opposite direction, the threads gather and regroup into a solid whole: the courage of the survivors and the hope of building a better future. What fell apart, and what came together, were individuals, communities, and entire nations.
